Keep reading to find out more and decide if cloth diapers are right for your baby.

Using Cloth Diapers for Your Baby Can Save Money

One of the best things about cloth baby diapers is that they can be used again and again, saving you from having to constantly purchase new disposable diapers at the store.  Studies show that parents who use cloth baby diapers spend around one tenth of the cost on diapers that parents who purchase disposable diapers do.  When you purchase cloth diapers, you'll buy most (or all) of them upfront when your baby is born, so though it can seem like a lot, the one time cost is much lower than it would be if you were to continually buy disposables.

How much will I spend on cloth baby diapers?

The cost of cloth baby diapers will depend on the brand and type of fabric (organic or not) that you choose.  Prices for cloth diapers range from 15 dollars for a dozen of plain thinner diapers up to 300 dollars a dozen for pricier brands made with all organic materials.  If you go mid-range, you can get a set of twelve diapers for around 150 dollars.
Benefits of using cloth baby diapers

There are so many benefits to using cloth diapers over disposable plastic diapers, it would be hard to list them all here.  One of the biggest benefits is that cloth baby diapers are cheaper than disposables.  Buying cloth diapers can save you up to $1,200 or more.  Another benefit is that cloth diapers are more comfortable for your baby.  Cloth diapers are less likely to give your child diaper rash and because they are fabric, they tend to move better with your baby.

And of course you can't ignore the environmental benefits of cloth diapers.  It's estimated that disposable diapers generate up to sixty times more solid waste than cloth diapers.
What to look for in baby cloth diapers

The main things to look for when shopping for cloth diapers for baby are durability and thickness, fit, and ease of use.  One of the things that is important is the thickness of the cloth baby diaper.  If the diaper is thin, it may be cheaper but you'll have to purchase an additional diaper cover to prevent leaks.  Opt for a thicker diaper that doesn't require an additional cover to make things easier.

Some cloth diapers are made to fit your baby at any size, while some come in specific sizes.  Make sure that if you buy sized diapers that you buy the right size that you'll need.  Not all cloth baby diapers are the same, some will require diaper pins, others require special fastners and still others have built in velcro or other means of fastening the diaper.  And be sure to buy just one type of cloth diaper to make things simpler - you don't want to have to figure out how to put on a diaper all over again each time you diaper your baby.

How many cloth diapers will I need for my baby?

You will need at least 2 dozen cloth baby diapers, but 3 dozen will require less frequent washing.  Keep in mind that younger infant babies will usually need more frequent diaper changes than toddlers.

Where to buy cloth baby diapers

This is one case where regular retailers don't quite measure up.  If you go looking for cloth baby diapers at a store like Target or Walmart or even some baby stores, you will be disappointed.  Most stores only carry one or two kinds, usually of poor quality.  This is probably because there are many different types of cloth baby diapers and stores just can't carry them all.

The best place to purchase cloth baby diapers by far is on the internet.  Many manufacturers sell diapers direct through their websites or through an internet seller like Amazon or an online baby store.  Some of the better brands of cloth baby diapers include Bum Genius, Bummis, Thirsties and Kushies and Happy Heiny's.  All of these brands are available online.

Choosing the right type of cloth diapers for your baby

There are so many different brands and types of cloth baby diapers that it can be a bit confusing to decide which kind is best for your baby.  Think about your lifestyle and how you plan to do things with your baby.  If you need to do quick diaper changes and your baby will frequently be traveling out and about, it's best to go with a cloth baby diaper that has a built in liner and has snaps or fastners that can be put in place easily and quickly.

Another thing to think about is whether you want to purchase additional diapers as your child grows bigger.  Many cloth baby diapers are made to be one-size-fits-all and are adjustable to different sizes from newborn to toddler.  This sometimes results in a heavier diaper for younger babies.  Other cloth diapers for baby will be in particular sizes (usually extra small through extra large) so you must buy additional diapers as your child grows.

Also some cloth diapers for baby will feature different patterns and colors.  If your child will often wear a diaper and a shirt or dress or their diaper will show, you might want to consider buying some cloth diapers that are decorated.  However, keep in mind that some diaper patterns will show through lighter colored clothing.

Washing Cloth Baby Diapers

Unlike disposable diapers that can be simply thrown away when they are soiled, cloth baby diapers need to be washed so your baby can use them again.  You will likely be doing a load of diaper laundry every other day or every 3 days depending on how many sets of diapers you have.

In between washing, you can store used diapers in a trashcan with a lid or a diaper bin.  Your method for washing can vary depending on your personal preferences, but the first step would be to dispose of any solids in the toilet.  Many parents also like to "rinse" the diaper in toilet water before placing it into a washing machine.

Then wash the diapers with cold water and detergent.  Follow with another wash cycle in the machine with hot water and detergent.  Then do a rinse with a half of a cup of vinegar and one more final rinse.  From there you can either hang the diapers to dry or place them in a dryer.  Do not use fabric softener on cloth diapers, it will lower their absorbancy.
