Baby Highchairs

Find a baby highchair that's safe and easy to use for feedings and fun.

One of the most used items that you'll buy for your child is a baby highchair.  From a few months old to toddler stage, your baby will use a highchair for all sorts of things.

Versatile enough to use for feeding your child, a quick nap or just holding your baby in one place while he or she sits or plays, a highchair for baby is something you will use over and over again.

Typically chosen later than most of your other
baby items, a baby highchair isn't needed until your baby gets a little older, and is sitting up on his or her own or starting to eating solid foods.

But are the must-haves for a highchair for babyAnd how can you be sure your baby highchair is safe? Read on to find out.

You'll Use A Baby Highchair More Than You Think

You may think that you'll only use a highchair for baby feedings, but when you start to use a highchair, you'll quickly discover that it can be used for a variety of things.  You can use a baby highchair for playtime, napping (if it reclines), holding the baby while you read to him or her, while the baby is watching a video or you can use it just for keeping the baby safe while he or she is in a seated position.

How much does a baby highchair cost?

Highchairs are built to be sturdy and last a long time, so depending on the features they can be expensive.  Most chairs are in the range of 100-200 dollars with cheaper models ringing in at around 80 dollars and the most expensive chairs at 250 dollars and up.  If you shop around online you can often find the most competitive prices.
What to look for in a highchair for baby

The most important items to look for when shopping for a highchair are durability, safety and ease of cleaning.  Your baby will be using a highchair for a while so you want something that will last and be safe.  Because you'll feed your baby in the highchair, it will have to be cleaned often.

A highchair for baby should have a wide base - this makes it more stable.  You don't want the highchair to fall over, so a wide base helps keep the chair steady when your baby is moving around in it.
Another thing to watch for in baby highchairs is ease of use.  Make sure the tray is easy for you to remove but not easy for baby to get out of, and make sure it will be easy for you to place your child into the chair.  If you have problems with this it will be a constant frustration because you'll be using the chair so frequently.

Since the highchair for baby will go in the kitchen or dining room with your regular table and chairs, color and style is also something to consider.

Baby Highchair Features

These days baby highchairs come with many different parts and features.  Some of the more popular features include height adjusters, built-in toys, cup holders, wheels, easy fold-up, dishwasher safe trays, the ability to convert into toddler chairs and booster seats or child seats, and reclinable backs.

There are some features that can make using a highchair easier and safer.  One of them is a shoulder strap and harness - this is the best way to keep your baby in the highchair.  Another thing that you'll want are washable cushions and straps.  A recline feature is also helpful if your child falls asleep during feedings or other activities in the chair.

The extra features that you'll need depend on the kind of activity your baby will do in the highchair and how long you want to use the chair.  For example, if your child is going to play in the highchair, then extras like built-in toys will be helpful.  And if you want to use the highchair until your child is past the toddler stage you'll want to get a chair with an adjustable headrest and features like a child booster seat that can be used as your baby grows bigger.

Where to buy a baby highchair

Baby highchairs are quite a specialized product, so they are only available at a few different places.  You can buy a highchair online (which is where you'll find the best selection) but they are also available at brick and mortar locations.  Baby stores like Babies 'R Us and discount stores like Target and Walmart all sell highchairs.

When is the right time to buy a highchair?

Because your baby will begin eating breastmilk or formula rather than solid foods, you do not have to get a highchair for your baby immediately before or after birth.  It is different for every child, but most babies start on solid foods at around the 6 month mark and up.

When your baby begins to eat solids, you definitely need a highchair for feedings.  However, many parents use a baby highchair to hold thier baby when the baby is playing or just sitting up.  In this case, you can start using a highchair for baby as soon as your baby is able to sit up on his or her own.  This can be as early as 4 months in some children, but every child is different.

How does a baby highchair work?

A highchair holds your baby in an upright position for feeding or other activities.  You place your child into the highchair and secure the straps or belts to keep baby safe.  Then making sure baby's hands are away from the tray, lock the tray in place and you're good to go!

Baby Highchair Safety

Keeping your baby safe in his or her highchair is something you have to be constantly vigilant about.  There are lots of ways your child could hurt his or herself with a highchair.  To practice good highchair safety always strap your baby in using all of the belts on the highchair (the waist and between-the-legs straps) and watch out for baby's hands and fingers when attaching the tray.

If your baby's highchair folds up or has rolling wheels, make sure it is in the fully locked position before placing your child into it.  And most importantly, never ever leave your baby unattended in a highchair where he or she could tip it over, fall out of the chair or hurt hands and fingers on the tray parts.
